Day 1 Rio de Janeiro Itinerary: Açaí, Sugarloaf Mountain, Farmer’s Market, Lunch, & Sunsets
Grab A Bowl Of Açaí (Tacacá do Norte)
As soon as you step foot on Brazilian grounds, you must begin the first day of your Rio de Janeiro itinerary by grabbing a bowl of açaí, and the best place to do so is Tacacá do Norte. You can add plenty of toppings to your açaí bowl such as fruits, and granola.
Get A Bird’s Eye View Of Rio From Sugarloaf Mountain
The first sightseeing spot in this Rio city guide is Sugarloaf Mountain, an iconic 396-meter-high peak that offers breathtaking views of the city. To get to the top, you have to take a cable car, which is a small vehicle that takes you from the bottom of the mountain to the top using the Rio’s cableway system.
This is one of the best places to visit in Rio de Janeiro that will allow you to admire the city from multiple angles— and heights!
The cable car is available from 8 am to 9 pm every day and runs at 20-minute intervals. Be sure to arrive before opening hours to avoid the long line to enter. If you plan on visiting during sunset, which is recommended, then I suggest you buy your tickets in advance here.
Visit The Feira Market
Another Rio de Janeiro attraction you want to add to your Rio de Janeiro itinerary is Feira Market, the go-to place for purchasing fresh produce, handmade crafts, and authentic souvenirs. Make sure to have some cash with you as not all vendors accept credit cards or virtual payments.
There is a wide selection of produce that I wasn’t familiar with and happily purchased. Besides produce there are many vendors to grab a bite to eat. One of my favorites was the tapioca. It was similar to a crepe, but made with tapioca flour and you can choose one that is sweet or savory. Be sure to try the fresh sugarcane juice as well.
The Feira market is at a different location every day. Be sure to check with your hotel so they can assist you in finding where it will be located the day you plan on visiting.

Lunch At Nova Capela
Nova Capela is a well-known restaurant that features local favorites like feijoada croquettes and codfish croquettes, which are two excellent options for those looking to try out some of Rio’s rich flavors. I suggest you order both because the flavors will be an explosion in your mouth.
This isn’t just a regular spot to grab a bite to eat, you will see many locals here on their lunch break.
Watch A Sunset On The Beach
After a full day of touring and eating, it is time to relax while watching the sunset on the beach. Some famous beaches you can find in Rio are Copacabana and Ipanema, with clear waters and white sand. So grab a nice beach chair and a caipirinha and enjoy a wonderful Brazilian sunset.

Day 2 Rio de Janeiro Itinerary: Christ The Redeemer, Santa Teresa, Selarón Steps, & Brazilian Steakhouse
See Corcovado – Christ the Redeemer
You can’t travel to Rio de Janeiro without visiting Christ the Redeemer conveniently located at Mount Corcovado. This is one of the top Rio de Janeiro attractions you cannot miss and gets 2 million visitors per year. Whether you’re a follower or someone who wants to visit iconic places, the Christ the Redeemer statue, and its journey to get to the top, will grant you stunning views of Rio.
Opening hours are every day from 8 am to 7 pm, but the last train to go up is at 5 pm. The train up can take up to 20 minutes and holds around 180 passengers. Be sure to arrive early to avoid the crowds, if possible. I can’t stress enough how crowded it will be. So purchase your tickets in advance to avoid at least one queue.
Avoid waiting in line and buy your tickets in advance for Christ the Redeemer.
Stroll Around Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian neighborhood with narrow streets, colorful houses, and art studios. I recommend you grab some lunch at Térèze, a local gem that offers both Brazilian and international dishes. Be sure to grab a table by the window to enjoy a wonderful view while eating.
Walk The Selarón Steps
You’ve probably seen hundreds of pictures of the Selarón Steps all over Instagram, and they’re one of the free things to do in Rio de Janeiro. The mosaic masterpiece, created by Jorge Selarón, features stunning drawings and vibrant colors that showcase Rio’s rich cultural history.
The Selarón Steps are a very popular attraction. I suggest arriving early to truly enjoy the colorful steps.
Eat At A Brazilian Steak House
After touring the city and climbing millions of stairs, it is time to grab lunch at a famous Brazilian steak house, Churrascaria Palace, where they serve succulent meats in the traditional rodizio style. You will not leave hungry after dining here!

Day 3 Rio de Janeiro Itinerary: More Açaí & Exploring Ipanema

They have plenty of options to choose from, and what’s great about these bowls is that you can easily customize them by adding your favorite toppings such as strawberries, bananas, granola, and more.
Visit Garota de Ipanema
Garota de Ipanema is the birthplace of the famous song “The Girl From Ipanema”, and a great Rio de Janeiro attraction to immerse yourself in the cultural scene of Brazil.
The restaurant is accustomed to people coming in to see the place where the famous song was inspired. Along the walls, you will see photos of the girl from Ipanema and the musician as well.

Ipanema has vibrant streets that call your name, lined with beautiful shops, cafes, and boutiques. This third day of your Rio de Janeiro itinerary is all about exploring Brazil’s vibrant culture!
Relax At The Beach In Ipanema
Once you’re done strolling around Ipanema, head over to the beach to unwind. The golden sand of Ipanema Beach is perfect for starting a new book or simply enjoying the views. Honestly, this was my favorite beach to visit in Rio de Janeiro.

Have Dinner At Zaza Bistro
ZaZa Bistro is renowned for its incredible menu that features Brazilian and international dishes. It has a wonderful atmosphere and the staff is super friendly, so no matter if you speak Portuguese or another language, they’re ready to help you with anything you might need. Be sure to order one of their specially crafted cocktails to go with your meal as well.
Be sure to make reservations ahead to avoid waiting. It’s a pretty popular restaurant and gets busy during peak lunch and dinner hours.
Day 4 Rio de Janeiro Itinerary: Copacabana, Centro, Lunch, Beer, & Samba

The Centro is one of the top Rio de Janeiro attractions you shouldn’t miss. The historic center of Rio is filled with colonial architecture and vibrant street life, and I recommend you stop by Boteca Belmonte for a refreshing caipirinha.

Fuel Up At Lubuta Bar
Lubuta Bar is a local favorite, known for its diverse menu and welcoming atmosphere, and it is the perfect place to try out some of Brazil’s most iconic drinks, accompanied by tasty side dishes. No matter what you order here, your tastebuds will be pleased.
I would eat here again and again. This was my favorite place to eat during my visit to Rio de Janeiro. Seating is limited on the inside, however, there are beach chairs and umbrellas across the street that are for extra seating.

Armazém Senado is a popular spot and doors have been open since 1907! This unique bar is a must-see in Rio and offers a wide selection of local and international brews. It is the perfect place to grab a cold beer and recharge your batteries before continuing with your Rio de Janeiro itinerary.

How Many Days Do You Need For Rio de Janeiro?
While this 4-day itinerary covers the essentials, you can choose to extend your stay to explore the city without rushing, especially if you want to tour specific neighborhoods or engage in other fun activities.
Arriving In Rio de Janeiro
The majority of international flights land at Galeão International Airport, the main airport of Rio. Here you can find plenty of taxis, buses, and ride-sharing options to take you to your accommodation.
Getting Around Rio de Janeiro
Getting around Rio is pretty easy, as there are various transportation options such as buses, taxis, metro, and ride-sharing services. They have different rates and you can choose whatever feels more comfortable and affordable according to your budget. Walking is also a great way to explore certain neighborhoods!
During my visit, I was able to get around easily by foot and ride-sharing. They do have Uber, and you will find it is super cheap, which makes it easier to get around farther distances.

Is Rio de Janeiro Safe?
As with any other touristic destination, you should be cautious and be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially in crowded areas. Stick to well-traveled routes and neighborhoods and avoid the favelas (slums). Although I didn’t travel alone on this trip, I wouldn’t hesitate to return as a solo female traveler. During my visit, I walked several places by myself.
Also, use reputable transportation options like well-known ride-sharing services, the local metro and bus, as well as identifiable taxis.
What to Pack for Rio de Janeiro
Bring a crossbody bag for security, comfortable shoes for exploration, cash for small transactions, and a rain jacket or umbrella, as weather conditions can be unpredictable. If you follow this Rio de Janeiro itinerary, you won’t need anything other than these things, which are pretty convenient for light travelers or small suitcases.
When to Visit Rio?
The best time to visit Rio is during the Brazilian summer (December to March) for warm weather and lively festivities such as the famous Carnival. However, Rio’s mild climate makes it a year-round destination.

Rio offers many accommodation options that will suit plenty of travelers according to your budget, preferences, and needs. Here are 3 options I love:

Copacabana Hotel is a luxury place with amenities like a private beach entrance, free Wifi, a pool, and a super-relaxing spa. It also has 3 restaurants on-site that offer the best Brazilian dishes.
Mid-Range – Miramar Hotel by Windsor
Miramar Hotel is a mid-range option that offers stunning views of Rio from every room, as well as amenities like an air conditioner, free Wi-Fi, a TV, and a fitness room. If you can, get a room with an ocean view of Copacabana Beach.
Budget-Friendly – Ipanema Beach Hostel
Ipanema Beach Hostel is a great affordable option with convenient amenities such as free Wi-Fi, room cleaning service, free breakfast, and a nightclub for entertaining!
